Meet Jonathan Basilious, the owner of the most awesome Subaru Sambar in Toronto!
How did you first encounter the Kei truck greatness?
I went to a car meet in high school and a Honda Acty on some huge 15×8 wheels pulled up, it was love at first sight.
Tell us your Kei truck story, how did you acquire your badass ride?
Since that meet in high school I was set on getting my hands on a Kei Truck. Once I got my first proper job out of school, a good friend of mine was starting a Kei Truck import business and brought over this sambar for me.
Any mods or plans? Share the details!
I’d like to redo the interior; my vinyl seats are starting to fall apart. Nothing else planned. As for what’s already done. New paint, wheels, lowering springs, exhaust, and lots of little things all over like the spoilers and clear lights.
What do you mainly use your Kei Truck for?
I don’t winter drive it but come summer time, I somewhat daily drive it, as long as I don’t have to go too far. I enjoy being active in the local car community, going to meets and shows but more than anything I just like getting to drive it and rack up some good miles.
Have any wild Kei Truck tales or fun facts about your ride?
Lotta strange stuff happens when you’re in a Kei Truck. Earlier this summer I was going for a cruise and someone on a sport bike kept eyeing me. I thought he was just checking out the truck but then he pulled up right next to me, pulled out a mango from somewhere in his jacket and tried to hand it to me through the window.
Favorite thing about owning a Kei truck?
I like seeing how excited people get about it. It puts a smile on a lot of people’s faces and It’s a car you don’t need to be a car person to like.
