Meet Rod from Houston, Texas! He drives a badass Honda Acty & 1993 R33 Type M Spec Skyline.
How did you first encounter the Kei truck greatness?
The first time I saw one in person was a couple years back when I was Stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. Our local detail garage owned a kei truck. That was my first time seeing one. And I’ve always wanted one.
Tell us your Kei truck story, how did you acquire your badass ride?
I usually import cars for myself. I owned a hand full of RHDs. My current car that I still have is an R33 Skyline. I always kept my eyes on Honda Acy’s. I stayed patient waiting for a super clean truck. One popped up for the price point I wanted and was super clean. This year in March I bought it, and it arrived 7 weeks later.

The mini truck is fully sponsored by Kansei wheels (they sponsored my mini truck and my R33 Skyline). I’m running 15×6+0 on 195/45/15. The truck came with a full wood grain steering wheel. Custom battery plate, which you can easily attach your trickle charger to. I also had a 7.62 ammo box sitting around. I have it side mounted on the bed to hold all the tie downs. I have a front lip spoiler and Wirus Win Exhaust.
My plans for the truck, modification wise, is a roll cage built for the rear and inside cab. Due to the extra weight, I’m upgrading the front suspension and rear shocks. I’m waiting for a 2in lift to arrive with the over fender flairs from Japan.
What do you mainly use your Kei Truck for?
I mostly use it to go fishing. I load up my 10 foot kayak and go, since I’m like 15 minutes from the beach. I’ve been building a wood fence around our property and the mini truck has been carrying all the materials, over 300 wood fence pickets in one trip.
Have any wild Kei Truck tales or fun facts about your ride?
When I first imported the mini truck, I was driving around picking up supplies for my garage. Mini truck wasn’t registered yet and only had Japanese plates. Local law enforcement pulls out in front of me. He slows down, moves over and lets me pass him. He gets behind me and comes back around and just gives me a thumbs up 😂.
I get on the highway all the time with the mini truck. I hit about 120 KM going around slower traffic.
Favorite thing about owning a Kei truck?
Just being able to fit anywhere . I sometimes park in the return basket area at your local supermarket.
