How did you first encounter the Kei truck greatness?
I ran into a bloke in our town with a 2018 Suzuki Carry so we chatted about Kei trucks. I hadn’t seen one since I was a Navy Submariner and visiting Japan.
Tell us how you acquired your badass ride?
The dealer in Australia who was bringing them in was about 100 kms away so I went down and was looking at getting a more basic older model but this 2020 HiJet Jumbo with only a few thousand kms on the clock was available. It just made complete sense.
Any mods or plans? Share the details!
I dont think I will do any mods to it. It really is a brilliant machine as it is. I equate it to the VW Beetle or Citroen 2CV. It’s brilliantly engineered for a purpose to a design brief. It’s comfortable, I can zip around and do everything I need to do in it and even my miniature Dachshund happily sits on the parcel shelf behind me.
What do you mainly use your Kei Truck for?
It’s mainly used for running around to the shops, collecting parts for my classic cars and cleaning up around the property.
Have any wild Kei Truck tales or fun facts about your ride?
People are amused by it until they hear it’s actually dual range 4WD with a diff lock. Between my 1933 MG J2 and my HiJet the total displacement of my cars is around 1.6 litres. In a world of “bland sameness” the Kei truck stands out as something different, economical, fun and makes people smile. Kids love it and smile when they see it and that has to be a good thing.
Favorite thing about owning a Kei truck?
My favourite thing about the Kei truck is the build quality. It’s superbly finished, easily the quality of a vehicle two or three times the price. My other favourite thing is filling up the tank next to someone in a Dodge Ram or similar. They are usually seething🤣🤣
